Оля Шевелі

Born in the Munsterlager Displaced Persons Camp in post–World War II Germany, Olya Sheweli has devoted more than five decades to advancing financial co-operatives, civic governance, and Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada and abroad. In the credit union sector, she was elected President of the World Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions in August 2013. She also held senior positions with the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada (CUCUC), serving as Vice-President and President. Her board leadership started with the United Ukrainian Credit Union (UUCU) in 1979. She chaired the organization from 2005 until its 2012 merger, then continued as a board member of Ukrainian Credit Union Limited (UCU). Beyond finance, Sheweli contributed to community and governance: she served as President of the UCC Ontario Provincial Council from 2007 to 2011 and led the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Hamilton as President from 2004 to 2010. She was also National President of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada (OYK). Her cultural involvement began in youth through PLAST and the Dibrova Women’s Choir. Her lasting impact on Canadian multiculturalism and community leadership was recognized with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal.
