From a young age, Bohdan Kolacz developed a passion for photography and storytelling. He photographed events with his black-and-white camera, and that interest later grew into videography and a commitment to supporting the Ukrainian community through volunteer work. For many years, Bohdan has donated his time and skills to document Ukrainian cultural events, performances, and celebrations. From 1995 to 2000, he filmed performances of the Oshawa “Barvy” Ukrainian Ensemble. Between 2004 and 2010, he documented the “Young Talents” festival organized by the Association of Ukrainians “Zakerzonnia.” His volunteer work has also included filming the “Matura Ball” (Ukrainian Canadian School Board of Toronto) and “Lemkivska Vatra” (Canadian Lemko Association). Bohdan has recorded major moments in the Oshawa Ukrainian community, including monument dedications, commemorations related to the war in Ukraine, the Fiesta Cultural Festival, Ivan Franko Ukrainian School concerts, and Ukrainian Canadian Congress—Durham Region Branch events. Since February 2022, he has faithfully documented weekly rallies supporting Ukraine at the Oshawa Highway 401 overpass every Sunday, helping preserve a visual record of the community’s ongoing solidarity. His dedication and creativity help preserve Ukrainian community memories for future generations.
